Academics

  • Parents and students may wonder what are the academics of MMWA? It's everything and anything - we are only limited by what incoming students study in their home communities. Of course the traditional subjects are taught, but in recent years we've had students in AP classes, Chinese language, graphic design, pottery, woodworking, etc. We teach what students are studying at their home high schools and middle schools.
  • The curriculum of Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy is unique to each student as it follows that of his or her sending school. Our teachers are able to cover a greater amount of material in a one-on-one or small group setting. Teachers are encouraged to expand the curriculum to develop projects within the subject as well as to help students strengthen writing and reading skills along with study habits and time management skills.
  • MMWA has worked with over 50 schools, both public and private. We enjoy a positive reputation and work on every level to accommodate teachers and students. We welcome feedback, modifying aspects to satisfy the concerns and needs of each teacher.
  • Students are expected to maintain no lower than a B- average in all course work while attending MMWA. If a student's grade/work falls below the minimum required level, training privileges are revoked until all work has been completed and the respective teacher and MMWA Director have given their approval for the student to return to training. Each student is assessed on a monthly basis with Progress Reports sent to parents and sending schools. Grades are given at the end of each quarter and submitted to the sending school.

Session 1:  November 13, 2011 - March 30/April 6, 2012 (18 weeks)

This session is recommended for all athletes (grades 8 - 12) looking to further their academics and racing skills.  Students will spend time establishing a solid foundation with teachers through concentrated class time as they adjust to the rigors of Academy life.  This expanded time frame will also allow for physical testing, equipment evaluation & modification, and goal-setting with the MMSC coaching staff.  An optional training camp is offered by MMSC staff (in late November at Vail) that work with the academic requirements of MMWA students who choose to participate. (Expenses for the trip are an additional cost above tuition and room and board fees and average approximately $2,500 to $3,000.)

Session 2:  January 2, 2012 - March 16, 2012 (10 weeks)

This session is available to 7th* and 8th grade students. It allows younger students to see if they are prepared for the academic and athletic rigors and commitment of the MMWA program. The maturity level of students this age should be considered for students planning to board at the Academy.  For those who wish, host family settings are also available.

*Must be a third-year J4 and no boarding options are available to 7th graders at this time.

JumpStart Program:  December 5, 2011 - December 23, 2011 (3 weeks)

This session is open to third-year J4 and J3 athletes who would like to experience the Academy setting or get a jump on the season with full-time training and academic support.

Please Note! Due to race schedules and travel time, there is no February or March vacation for MMWA students. We ask that you do not make travel arrangements expecting your son or daughter to be excused. We rely on this time to continue with classes and move ahead so that students will be prepared to smoothly re-enter their sending school. Thank you for your cooperation.

My experiences at MMWA have changed my life, creating who I am today and sculpting who I will be tomorrow.  MMWA was the best college prep experience possible, handing me college responsibilities in a high school setting.
