Welcome from Director, Lori Furrer

This winter Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy (MMWA) will celebrate its 15th year of educating, developing, and guiding unique young adults who are passionate and committed to academics and athletics. Founded by a group of people who saw the need for a local program, MMWA was designed to meet the many needs and interests of student, winter athlete, individual and family. Located in historic Stowe, Vermont, Mt. Mansfield serves as our playground and a renovated lodge as home to our students and staff.

The mission of the Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy is to provide a quality experience for each student that will encompass his or her academic demands and athletic pursuits. Our commitment to the Winter Term Model reflects the belief that there are many opportunities and experiences that enrich one’s life. Many of our students excel in a second sport, are involved in community activities and have significant relationships at their sending school. Our model truly allows for the best of both worlds.

Students learn in a one-on-one setting where confident learners engage in dynamic discussions, question without reservation and challenge without hesitation. They study a wide range of courses, including AP and honors level. Teachers provide immediate feedback, assess and address skill needs quickly and provide enrichment to standard curricula. A pottery studio, dark room, and graphic design programs provide opportunities for promising artists. The faculty at MMWA is a diverse group of people who combine a desire to educate with genuine respect for the students they teach.

Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak provide the most varied and challenging terrain available to athletes in the East. More important are the experiences that occur beyond the typical training session. Time spent in the woods, free skiing, and adventures with friends supplement formal training and greatly enrich a winter in Stowe.

A significant aspect of the Academy is family with roots and values setting the tone for the many relationships that develop among students and staff. Walking through the door one can immediately sense the camaraderie, respect and warmth that MMWA is known for. Our students are known for their humble and compassionate personalities, sense of humor and support and encouragement of their peers.

Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy is an extraordinary school because of the people who choose to be a part of it.
