Significant Facts Regarding MMWA
- Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy has been operating for 12 years. It is an independent school that is approved by the Vermont Department of Education and is reviewed by them every five years. MMWA is committed to adhering to all laws, policies and guidelines set forth by the Department of Education.
- All MMWA staff must have a minimum of a Bachelors degree and work experience or certification in the area in which they are hired to teach. Approximately 75% of the present faculty is either certified or retired certified teachers. About one third of the staff has anywhere from 10 to 25 years of teaching experience in both the private and public school sectors. Inexperienced teachers are coupled with seasoned faculty to assist in daily planning, curriculum enrichment, and methods of assessment and instruction.
- MMWA has worked with over 50 schools, both private and public, primarily in the East. We have enjoyed a very positive reputation and have worked on every level to accommodate teachers and students. We welcome feedback, modifying aspects to satisfy the concerns and needs of each teacher and their course.
- Students and parents are fully aware of the academic expectations of the Academy. Academics are priority. The majority of students who attend this program are in honors classes, are dedicated and motivated students, have supportive families and wish to remain a part of their sending school. Training/race privileges are revoked for any student who does not maintain expected academic standards.
- Our success has been measured not only in the performance of our students here at the Academy but also upon return to their sending school. Although they are missing key aspects of the classroom setting our hope is that they are gaining lifetime skills, experiencing an alternative form of education and developing confidence as individual learners.
- MMWA students have experienced not only an excellent college acceptance history but also have felt that they are ahead of their peers throughout the first year of college. The colleges they choose to attend are Middlebury College, Dartmouth College, Colby College, University of Vermont, Williams College, St. Lawrence University, Bates College, University of Utah, Montana State, University of New Hampshire, and Brown.
- Given all the positive aspects of the Academy we are fully aware of the concerns and doubts that teachers/administration have. It is not perfect and there will always be ways to improve. We are committed to constantly evaluating, reviewing and improving this program. We welcome any input that sending schools would like to provide.
- The Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy has provided over 300 students the ability to pursue both academic and athletic pursuits. These students have chosen this route, which is by far the hardest, which is a clear indicator of their commitment. This would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of each of the sending schools that have worked with us.
